Anthropic strikes acquihire deal for confidential-computing startup Opaque Systems

Anthropic will license Opaque's technology and hire part of its team, Constellation Research reported, as the AI lab courts enterprises that want sovereign and on-premises deployments.

Anthropic has agreed a deal for Opaque, a company that specialises in confidential computing and AI. News of the agreement emerged on October 13, 2026, when Opaque's chief executive announced it in a post.

The structure is not a simple purchase. Constellation Research reported that Anthropic will license Opaque's technology and bring on some of its team, which it described as an acquihire. The teaser on its own article says Anthropic "will acquire" Opaque, while the body of the piece describes the licence-and-hire arrangement. Dealroom and DigitalToday, a Korean technology outlet, also reported the deal; DigitalToday described it as Anthropic effectively taking over Opaque through an acquihire.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Neither Anthropic nor Opaque has said how many Opaque employees will move, or what happens to the people who do not.

What Opaque does

Opaque builds technology for running AI on sensitive data while keeping that data protected, an approach known as confidential computing. Constellation said the company worked with Nvidia, Intel, Microsoft and Google on confidential computing, and that it released a security framework that was adopted in Europe and the United Arab Emirates.

More recently, Opaque has been releasing open standards for sovereign AI and for on-premises deployments, Constellation reported. These address organisations that want to use AI models without sending regulated or proprietary data to a third party's cloud.

Opaque's chief executive, Aaron Fulkerson, wrote in his announcement: "We’re proud to share a new agreement with Anthropic that carries OPAQUE’s work forward." He added: "We helped establish confidential AI as a category."

The funding

Opaque raised a $24 million Series B at a $300 million valuation, according to Constellation Research and Dealroom. Dealroom lists $56 million raised in total. The reports reviewed did not name the investors in that round, and they did not say when it closed.

The valuation matters for the framing of the deal. A company valued at $300 million at its last round that ends up licensing its technology and handing part of its team to a larger buyer is a different outcome from a full sale, and the sources do not say what Opaque's shareholders will receive.

Why Anthropic wants it

Constellation argued that the deal is logical because Anthropic is courting enterprises that are weighing on-premises deployments, open models and sovereign AI architectures. Dealroom reached a similar view, saying the move strengthens Anthropic's security credentials as it pursues customers with strict data-residency and privacy needs.

Those are the buyers most likely to ask where their data is processed and who can see it. Confidential computing is one of the answers a vendor can give: the data stays encrypted even while a model is working on it, and the customer can verify that.

Anthropic did not publish the terms or a rationale in the material reviewed, so the strategic reasoning above is the analysts' reading rather than the company's stated plan.

A deal structure to watch

Licence-and-hire deals let a larger company take on technology and people without buying the whole business, which is why the reports distinguish between an acquisition and an acquihire.

For now, the open questions are which parts of Opaque stay independent, whether Opaque's existing customers keep getting support, and whether the open standards Opaque published will continue to be maintained.
