CARS24 buys vehicle-records app CarInfo for Rs 118 crore ($13M) ahead of possible IPO

CarInfo, used by more than 12 million people a month to check registration, insurance and traffic fines, gives the used-car marketplace a way to stay in touch with owners long after a sale.

CARS24, the Gurugram-based used-car marketplace, acquired CarInfo, an app that collects a vehicle's registration details, insurance and pollution-certificate validity, traffic challans and FASTag status in one place. The deal, confirmed on 5 January 2026, also brings in CarInfo's sister app for two-wheelers, BikeInfo.

CARS24 did not announce a price. MediaNama, citing a Ministry of Corporate Affairs filing, reported that CARS24's board approved issuing 92,292 compulsorily convertible debentures worth up to Rs 118 crore (about $13.1 million) in exchange for 99,999 equity shares of Velocitypedia Private Limited, the company that runs CarInfo. Within about an hour of MediaNama's report, CARS24 founder and group CEO Vikram Chopra posted on X that the company had acquired CarInfo.

CarInfo becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of CARS24. Both CarInfo and BikeInfo will continue as standalone apps with their existing teams, according to the company.

What CarInfo built

CarInfo was founded in 2016 by Sahil Ajmani, who is its co-founder and chief executive, MediaNama reported. The app lets owners look up ownership details, insurance and renewal dates, service history and pending challans for a vehicle, and keeps those records in one place.

Over time it added transactions on top of the records. MediaNama reported that CarInfo facilitates buying and selling of new and used cars, sells car insurance with partners ACKO and Policybazaar, and offers instant personal loans of up to Rs 5 lakh (about $5,600). In November 2025 it began piloting home booking and delivery of bikes.

According to Entrackr, CarInfo has more than 12 million monthly active users. The company did not disclose its revenue or headcount.

How the deal is structured

The filing described a share swap rather than a cash payment. CARS24 is issuing the debentures, each with a face value of Rs 10 and a premium of Rs 12,775.45, in return for CarInfo's shares. Of the 99,999 Velocitypedia shares changing hands, 95,000 come from Ajmani and 4,999 from Gurmail Singh, CarInfo's head of engineering, MediaNama reported.

At the time of the filing the agreement had not yet been executed, but Chopra's post the same day said the acquisition was done. CARS24 has not officially confirmed the Rs 118 crore figure.

Why CARS24 is buying

CARS24 has built its business around one moment in a car's life: the sale. CarInfo gives it a product that owners open repeatedly between sales, to renew insurance, check a fine or confirm that documents are valid. Entrackr reported that the deal fits CARS24's plan to expand beyond vehicle transactions into the wider ownership lifecycle and to deepen engagement with car and bike owners.

In announcing the deal, Chopra said many common problems for vehicle owners stem from routine oversights, such as expired documents or records that cannot be found when needed, Entrackr reported.

CarInfo is CARS24's second acquisition in a year, after it bought the automotive community platform Team-BHP.

A buyer preparing for the public market

CARS24 is backed by Peak XV Partners, SoftBank Group and Tencent. In the 2024 financial year its India business reported operating revenue of Rs 6,917 crore (about $770 million), up 25% from the year before, and a net loss of Rs 498.4 crore (about $55 million), MediaNama reported. Entrackr said it sold more than 200,000 cars that year. The company has not yet filed results for the 2025 financial year.

MediaNama reported that CARS24, Spinny and CarDekho are preparing for stock market listings within 12 to 18 months and have started talks with bankers, though none had filed draft papers with the Securities and Exchange Board of India. CARS24 has also cut hundreds of jobs in non-core product and technology teams and shut its Inspare spare-parts and FourDoor car-servicing businesses.

Its rivals are also buying. Spinny is set to acquire the car-servicing platform GoMechanic, a deal Entrackr first reported in November 2025.
