Elsevier, the scientific and medical information company owned by RELX, announced on June 3, 2026 that it had acquired Wellsheet, a U.S. health technology company whose software gathers patient data from electronic health records and shows clinicians the information relevant to a decision. Terms were not disclosed.
Wellsheet will become part of Elsevier's Clinical Solutions business. Elsevier plans to combine it with ClinicalKey AI, its clinical decision support tool, so that answers drawn from medical literature can be matched to the details of a specific patient inside the record system doctors already use.
Wellsheet is based in Newark, New Jersey, according to Irving Levin Associates, which counted the deal as the 99th eHealth transaction of 2026 in its LevinPro HC database.
What Wellsheet built
Wellsheet's software sits on top of hospital EHR systems. It collects and structures large amounts of data from a patient's chart and presents a condensed view, so clinicians do not have to search through the record themselves. TechTarget reported that the tool is EHR-agnostic and connects to the major systems through APIs and standards such as FHIR.
Elsevier said Wellsheet is deployed across 139 hospital sites in the United States and is integrated with major EHR systems. Its chief executive and co-founder is Craig Limoli. When it raised its Series A in 2020, the company said it would use the money to expand its engineering and go-to-market teams and to extend its platform across EHR vendors.
“Clinicians today face a genuine tension: the patient data they need is in complex EHR systems, and the trusted evidence they need is somewhere else entirely. That gap costs time and introduces risk.”
Why Elsevier is buying
ClinicalKey AI answers clinicians' questions using full-text content and practice guidelines from more than 1,000 medical journals and organisations, with each answer traceable to its source. Elsevier says it is used in more than 300 hospitals worldwide. What it lacked was direct knowledge of the patient in front of the doctor.
Omry Bigger, president of Clinical Solutions at Elsevier, said patient data sits in complex EHR systems while the evidence clinicians need is held somewhere else, and that combining the two would give health systems governed AI at the point of care. Elsevier cited a 2026 McKinsey study in which more than half of U.S. healthcare leaders surveyed said difficulty fitting generative AI into existing workflows was the biggest barrier to scaling it.
Elsevier said the combined product would first focus on pulling together a relevant patient view, surfacing guidelines from ClinicalKey AI, and guiding discharge planning, follow-up and gaps in care. It said later work could extend into decision support, care pathways, patient engagement and analytics.
The founders and the funding
Wellsheet raised a $3.8 million Series A in June 2020 led by SpringTide Investments, with BioAdvance and Newark Venture Partners taking part, according to the company's announcement on Business Wire. The company said at the time that the round brought its total funding to about $6 million. MobiHealthNews also covered the round.
Limoli said Wellsheet's presence across major EHR systems, combined with Elsevier's global reach, would let the companies bring the product to health systems in other countries. Elsevier serves researchers, doctors, nurses and educators in 170 countries. Neither company said how many Wellsheet employees would join Elsevier or what the deal was worth.
A busy market for clinical AI
The deal is part of a steady flow of healthcare software acquisitions. LevinPro HC data cited by Irving Levin Associates shows eHealth as the second most active healthcare sector for deals in 2026, after physician medical groups. The database recorded 301 eHealth deals in 2025 and 248 in 2024.
For Elsevier, the deal fits the point it made with the McKinsey figure: clinical AI is hard to scale when it sits outside the workflow. Owning Wellsheet's EHR connections gives ClinicalKey AI a way into the record systems at the 139 hospital sites where Wellsheet is already installed.
