Salesforce agrees to buy Fin, formerly Intercom, for $3.6 billion

Salesforce agreed to pay about $3.6 billion for Fin, the customer-support company that renamed itself after its AI agent a month earlier. Fin says the agent serves more than 30,000 businesses and will sit alongside Salesforce's Agentforce.

Salesforce said on June 15, 2026 that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Fin, the customer-service software company formerly known as Intercom, for about $3.6 billion. The price is subject to customary purchase-price adjustments. Salesforce did not say how much of the price would be paid in cash or in stock.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce's fiscal year 2027, subject to customary conditions including regulatory clearances. Salesforce said the purchase would not change the fiscal 2027 guidance it gave on May 27, 2026, or its capital return programme.

Fin's products and models will sit alongside Agentforce, Salesforce's own platform for AI agents, and Fin's AI team will join Salesforce. Eoghan McCabe, Fin's co-founder and chief executive, was quoted in the announcement; Salesforce did not say what role he would take after closing.

What Fin built

Intercom was founded in 2011 in Dublin by Eoghan McCabe, Des Traynor, Ciaran Lee and David Barrett, and later moved its headquarters to San Francisco. It built a business messaging and customer support platform used by companies to talk to their users.

In 2023 it launched Fin, an AI agent that answers customer support questions. The agent first ran on OpenAI's GPT-4 and later on Anthropic's Claude, before the company built Apex, its own model trained for customer support. In May 2026 Intercom renamed the whole company Fin.

Fin's agent handles customer queries end to end across live chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone and Slack. Salesforce said Fin has more than 30,000 business customers and that some deployments resolve an average of 76% of support volume without a human. Thinkbusiness reported that its customers include Amazon and Atlassian. Fin did not publish its revenue.

Why Salesforce is buying

Salesforce has made AI agents the centre of its strategy. Agentforce reached $1.2 billion in annual recurring revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 205% from a year earlier, the company said.

Salesforce said Fin's packaged products would give it a faster option for small and mid-sized businesses and some commercial customers that want to launch a support agent quickly, while Agentforce would cover larger enterprise projects.

"We're thrilled to welcome Fin to Salesforce as we enable every company to become an agentic enterprise," said Marc Benioff, Salesforce's chair and chief executive. He said Fin brings "proven agent technology, a deep commitment to customer success, and an incredible AI team."

The founders and the funding

Intercom was funded by venture capital investors. In March 2018 it raised a $125 million Series D led by Kleiner Perkins, with GV taking part, at a valuation of $1.275 billion. That round brought its total funding to $241 million, according to TechCrunch. Earlier backers included Bessemer Venture Partners, Index Ventures, Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg.

When it raised that round, Intercom had about 25,000 customers, including Atlassian, New Relic and Shopify, and said it hoped to grow its workforce beyond 500 employees. TechCrunch's headline at the time described the raise as a bid to take on Salesforce, the company that has now agreed to buy it.

The $3.6 billion price is almost three times the valuation of that 2018 round.

"Our technology has defined this category and set the new standards for what great customer service looks like today," McCabe said. He told The Next Web that Salesforce would let Fin deploy its agent "far and wide at a rate far faster than we could have ever achieved on our own."

What happens to customers

The deal still needs regulatory clearance. Salesforce listed the integration of Fin and possible disruption to business relationships among the risks of the transaction. Neither company has said whether Fin's agent will remain available to businesses that do not use Salesforce.

McCabe presented the sale as good for the businesses and consumers that use Fin's agent. "This is a major win for consumers of the world," he told Thinkbusiness.
